Trina gifted a book to Himu, when they met for the last time. The book was 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. On the first page of the book Trina inscribed “toke dilam eksho bacharer ekakityo” (Gifting you a hundred years of loneliness/solitude). Himu looked at the inscription and asked ‘Is this a compliment or curse?’
‘A curse, probably’ Trina said with a sarcastic grin.
‘I do not want this book, I have it already’ said Himu and gave the book back to Trina.
‘Keep it. This is my farewell gift’ said Trina. She was trying hard to hold back her tears.
Himu sighed and looked out of the taxi’s window. The sky looked grey all of a sudden.
They both were looking out of the windows in opposite directions. Trina was trying hard not to cry. And Himu was feeling a strange heaviness in his chest. ‘Why was he feeling sad?’ wondered Himu. Things were happening exactly the way he wanted. He never believed in commitments, love and marriage. He wanted a casual relationship with Trina, then why was he feeling so sad? Why was he feeling that there was something stuck in his throat, just above his Adam’s apple?
He turned and looked at Trina. He felt she was looking extremely pretty. Her beauty hurt him. He felt like hugging her tight and never let her go. He wanted to smother her with kisses, but there was a huge distance between them, even though they were sitting only few inches away from each other, on the rear seat of the taxi. A never ending distance tore them apart.
Himu took out a gift wrapped packet from his rucksack. He held it in his hand and said ‘Trina, even though you are cursing me to be lonely for the next hundred years but I want you to be happy for next thousand years.’ He gave the packet to Trina and asked the taxi driver to stop the car. He got down and went away. Trina kept looking at him going away from her forever. They never met ever again.
Carefully, Trina opened the gift-wrap. The book A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini lay neatly inside. She opened the book and on the first page Himu had written ‘I wish your life to be brightened by the lights of thousand Splendid Suns.’
This is linked to my previous story An endless night sky. The story concludes here.

Wonderful story. One who loves but wishes him eternal loneliness. The other who did not realize he loves her but wishes her happiness…😚

I love anything that goes with books. It isn’t a surprise that I liked this one too. 2 reasons –
1. – I, quite obviously, loved reading A Thousand Splendid Suns.
2. – The interaction happening in terms of the messages from the book titles makes this an interesting piece.
My question to the universe – Why do lovers have to separate?
